The US president wants the ban to be issued before the time of MWC 2019, the largest event of the telecommunications and mobile industry. The ban on Chinese telecommunications equipment has been mentioned since December 2018, and if approved, it will have a huge impact on China’s two largest telecommunications companies, Huawei and ZTE. Although not named in the new ban, the two companies were once identified by the US government as threats to national security.

The enactment of the ordinance just before the MWC 2019 is considered an attempt to show the importance of telecommunications infrastructure and network security issues.

This is also the latest move by the US government to limit the influence of Chinese companies, especially when the 5G network is being deployed in many countries. Huawei is one of the largest 5G network components companies in the world.

In August 2018, Mr. Trump’s defense bill passed banning US government and government contractors from using Huawei and ZTE equipment. The US Is About To Ban Chinese Telecommunications EquipmentBy January 2019, the United States urged European countries not to use Huawei’s devices to deploy the 5G network. However, not all countries are willing to respond to US calls, because replacing Huawei devices will be very expensive.

“Huawei is much more expensive than its competitors, but it is much better,” a spokesman for a European carrier asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of the problem. The quality of Huawei’s devices “really went ahead” of European rivals, he added.

In December 2018, Huawei’s CFO, Ms. Manh Van Chu, was arrested in Canada at the request of the United States. By this time, the United States was still trying to extradite Mrs Manh to the US for trial.
